Folks, this scares the bejesus out of me. According to Gallup PollĀ® more Americans accept theory of creationism than evolution. I have no issue with organized religion generally, however when an ENTIRE COUNTRY of 200 million+ people (who are supposedly among the best educated, according to us anyway) can blatantly disregard science, it kinda freaks me out. It translates into your office being 1/2 & 1/2 on whether dinosaurs really existed. I’ll put it out there right now, I believe in God & was brought up with Judeo-Christian values, but I most certainly do not believe that Earth was created 10,000 years ago & that the whole thing was supernatural & magical. Seriously?! Come on people. I can go even so far as to accept that God started the whole process, but the “theory” of Creationism basically assumes that everything in the Bible is true & should be taken at face value. Well, for that, I should definitely have slaves, never wear clothing made of more than one type of fabric, never cut my hair or shave, be able to stone to death anyone who doesn’t believe in God, I should think it’s totally cool to have sex with your father (think Lot’s daughters), & be able to (with out fear of retribution now or in the afterlife) kill my spouse if I’m cheated on. On that last one, no I’m not condoning adultery, it’s just the point that we’ve (I had hoped) come a bit beyond certain parts of the Bible and accepted them instead as parable, lessons to be learned, a sort of moral compass. And when I say those types of things mentioned in the Bible, religious people from across the map will jump out & explain why we don’t believe in (or at least act on) these outdated passages. But in the same breath, they’ll defend the idea that everything was created in 6 days, that we are the only life in existence, and that we are the center of the universe. And yet, these are the same people who spew all sorts of crazy rhetoric about Muslims believing “fundamentally” in their religion (we’ll save that little gem of a web discussion for another day boys & girls—for now “Osama = Needs to die” & “Middle East = not my #1 tourist destination right now”). I don’t know folks. God’s an awesome dude, but I think even He’s shaking his head on this one.

So what exactly are ranting about here? You say you were brought up believing the Bible and yet now you claim only some of it is true and most of it is an instruction book of metaphors? As for those actions you claim the Bible allows those who follow its “guidelines” to do, yes, I will be one of those people who will tell you all of those things mentioned were in the Old Testament and some actions were NOT of God (Lot’s daughters sleeping with their father) and some were rules made up by vaious ancient communities that the *people* had created for their own law. God did allow people to govern themselves with their own jurisdiction, even if their laws were not relevent to His Word. However, I am still confused as to what exactly your argument is? Are you just saying you’re amazed at how many people actually believe every single word in the Bible and should abide by every rule? I think most believers would say that the New Testament rules plus the Ten Commandments apply to the era we all live in, and the Old Testament is the history and lessons we should learn from. Please be more specific on what aspect of your topic people should comment about. If the whole post was just to wonder how many people beleive ALL events inside the Bible happened, then I am one of them. However, if your blog entry was asking if I believe all the rituals and customs that the ancient civilizations practiced, that we of today should follow, then no, I do not.

Actually the rant was regarding how so many people take the Bible at face value, being a book written by man for man. That in modern western society people continue to believe as fact the stories written 2000+ years ago to control myriad groups of people that until the religious texts were drafted had no other rules to follow. It bothers me to think that a majority of the people in the most powerful nation in the world would truly believe that evolution is a farce (despite mountains of evidence to the contrary). I have read liberally the arguments presented by Creationists as counter-points and they are weak at best. The experimental model is so loosely followed and then glazed over it sometimes hurts to even read them. So, yes I believe in God. However I also believe in science and that God allowed us to have the mental capacity to separate fiction from reality and moral parables from certain truths.

That was fun to read. I also think it is sad that so many people just reject the fact that everything was created scientifically and not religiously. We have proof that it was scientific. Why can’t people get that through their heads?
